How Kid Rock got into golf, according to John Daly

Kid Rock sunk a 40-foot putt in front of a golf legend at the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf celebrity shoot-out event, earning a shout-out from Jack Nicklaus himself on Twitter:

So how did Kid Rock, of all people, start golfing? His friend, golfer John Daly, explained to me in March during an event at Maryland Live! Casino.

“The funny thing is, him and Jamey Johnson were buddies. Jamey opened up for him a few years ago and I got to know him real well – I used to stay at Kid Rock’s house when we played at Warwick Hills – and he said ‘I’ll never play golf.’ And Jamey Johnson said ‘I’ll never chase that ball around.’ And I said well there’s certain things you can do on a golf course and you might like to do and entertain yourself and have fun with your buddies,” Daly said.

“And right after they did a concert in Orlando, Jamey calls me and says ‘hey man I lied to you. I ‘m playing golf every day … then Kid Rock (calls and) says ‘hey I’m calling you from Memorial.’ I (said) Memorial what happened are you visiting the troops? Did someone pass on? ‘No I’m at Jack Nicklaus’ tournament. I’m getting a lesson from Gary Nicklaus …’

“Now they call me and want some golf lessons. It’s amazing how passionate they are about it, they love it and it gives them a chance when they’re on the road to come stop at my house and get a break. I cook them a home-cooked meal and we go on the golf course.”

Unfortunately for Kid Rock, he lost the trophy to Larry the Cable Guy. More from UPI.com:

Kid Rock teamed up with Nicklaus for the contest. On one hole, the 47-year-old musician eyed the 40-foot attempt. Nicklaus watched his partner take the stroke, which went to the left before coming back to the right and dropping in. The singer celebrated by lifting his arm up in the air, before turning around and giving a high-five to the 18-time major winner.
